Bronx River Parkway, County of Westchester, NY
This project was a major highway reconstruction for the County of Westchester, involving a section of the Bronx River Parkway between Cemetery Road and Virginia Road, spanning approximately 1.5 miles. Not only was this entire stretch of parkway resurfaced, Montesano installed new drainage throughout, a 12-foot-wide grassed median to provide pre-treatment of storm water, wet swales, bio-retention areas, infiltration trenches for treatment practices, new traffic signals, and fiber optic cables. Portions of the road were widened in an effort to improve line-of-sight distance and three existing bridges were widened.
New Hempstead Road Reconstruction Project,
Rockland County, NY
The total rebuild of New Hempstead Road (NHR) is a complex, $28 million plus project which will take over two years to complete. NHR is a major artery servicing the New City Central Business District, County Government Buildings and the Supreme Court of New York, Rockland County.
The project spans approximately two and one half miles, from Main Street, to the Palisades Interstate Parkway. The existing drainage system and culverts throughout will be removed and replaced; including several large diameter culverts at depths over 23 feet. The project also includes the construction of 18 retaining walls (up to 300 feet in length), demolition of the former Rockland County Sheriffs’ Building (allowing the NHR “S” curve hill to be reconstructed conforming to contemporary standards), demolition of the existing Demarest Kill Bridge and replacing it with a precast concrete arch span unit (85 feet in length providing two additional traffic lanes).
In addition to the installation of several new turning lanes at key intersections and relocating existing stone walls, the entire roadway will be removed through the sub-base and replaced. The finished product will include installation of new sidewalks, granite curbs, as well as stone veneer on the Demarest Kill Bridge and several retaining walls.
The New York State Thruway Authority implemented cashless tolling at the Harriman Toll Barrier for the Woodbury Transit and Economic Hub Leaving NYS Thruway Authority’s, ensuring that motorists driving through this interchange will be able to pass through more quickly. The Authority converted the toll barrier for northbound traffic seeking to access Woodbury Common and NY Route 17 to cashless tolling. For southbound traffic from the Thruway’s ticketed portion of the system, two toll lanes remain in place until 2020, when the Thruway converts to cashless tolling system-wide.
Project specifics include the removal of the toll barrier and construction of overhead gantries with overhead access that are equipped with state-of-the-art All-Electronic Toll Collection technology including highway speed Automatic Vehicle Identification, Automatic Vehicle Classification and Detection ,and video tolling equipment including a Vehicle Enforcement System Construction of the overhead gantries and associated tolling equipment have replaced the toll barrier. One gantry is located immediately west of the Route 17 bridge over the railroad and the second on the southbound acceleration ramp, adjacent to the Woodbury Toll Plaza. Additionally, a new two-lane toll barrier was constructed within the Harriman site to continue traditional means of toll collection for travelers exiting the southbound Thruway at Harriman, which will remain in place until the entire Thruway system converts to cashless tolling by the end of 2020.
