For 50 years, Montesano Bros. has been out on New York’s roads and job sites helping build and maintain the infrastructure our communities rely on every day. In that time, we’ve watched equipment evolve, safety standards improve, and technology reshape the way work gets done. But after five decades in this business, one truth has always stayed the same: people are the heart of this industry. Nothing gets built without skilled workers, and how those workers are treated makes all the difference.
That’s why we’re grateful to Governor Kathy Hochul for signing S7485/A8465 into law and supporting concrete and asphalt haulers on public works projects. These men and women play a bigger role than most people realize. They don’t just move material from point A to point B. They keep projects on schedule, help maintain safe working conditions, and make it possible for crews to perform their jobs efficiently. When hauling runs smoothly, everything else does too.
Why Fair Pay Strengthens the Entire Industry
In our experience, fair compensation isn’t just a talking point. We’ve seen firsthand how it affects the quality of work on the ground. When workers earn a wage that reflects the responsibility and demands of their role, they can support their families, stay committed to the profession, and bring years of experience to every project. That stability creates better coordination on job sites, smoother operations, fewer delays, and ultimately, better roads and infrastructure for the public.
A living wage isn’t simply about income. It’s about dignity, retention, skill development, accountability, and long-term industry health. When workers thrive, the entire system benefits.
Creating a Level Playing Field
This new law also creates more consistency across regions, something that has been needed for a long time. Clear and uniform wage standards help ensure that responsible contractors aren’t competing against companies cutting corners. For contractors like us, who run union jobs, invest in training, and operate with long-term partnerships in mind, this matters greatly.
Uniform expectations allow companies to compete on what really counts: workmanship, experience, and reliability.
A Thank You to Our Legislators
We want to extend our appreciation to State Senator Shelley Mayer, Assemblyman Steve Otis, and the legislators who advocated for the working men and women of Westchester, Putnam, and New York City. Their leadership and persistence pushed this long-awaited protection across the finish line.
Montesano Bros.: Built on People, Built to Last
Half a century in this business has taught us that longevity doesn’t come from shortcuts. It comes from investing in people, honoring commitments, and supporting policies that strengthen the workforce and the communities we serve.
We’re proud to stand behind the men and women who build New York and keep our infrastructure moving forward. As we celebrate this win for the industry, we remain committed to the values that have guided us for 50 years: respect, craftsmanship, safety, and a belief that when workers are treated well, everyone benefits.
This is a meaningful step for our region, our industry, and the hardworking people who keep it running. Here’s to building a stronger future together.
